What aspect of cost controls gets you most excited to come to work each day?
The overall process of cost control excites me each day—it feels like solving a puzzle. Every day presents a new challenge, whether it’s identifying a problem or completing a task that requires research, analysis, strategy development, and implementation to achieve a goal. Going through that entire process to find a solution keeps me motivated and challenged.
Could you share a project challenge where effective cost management or project controls made the difference between success and setback?
I worked on a project with a tight budget and limited contingency funds available. Because of these constraints, we had to ensure effective cost management strategies were in place. One key approach we used was implementing material forecasting strategies, which helped us identify which materials needed to be purchased early on to lock in prices and which we could hold off on- or source from alternative vendors. This material forecasting strategy not only allowed us to stay within the parameters of a tight budget but also ensured timely material deliveries, minimizing schedule impacts.
What’s the most innovative way you’ve seen 10/6 approach cost controls that sets us apart in the industry?
I have seen our Data Innovation team at 10/6 go above and beyond in developing Power BI reports and dashboards. These tools have enhanced our clients’ ability to make data-driven decisions by providing both historical references and new insights into their data, setting us apart in the industry.

What’s a financial insight that changed the game for one of our projects?
A game-changing financial insight for one of our projects involved deep-diving into the granular details related to the purchase of long-lead materials. Initially, when forecasting costs and reaching out to vendors for quotes, we focused mainly on the unit price of the materials and the anticipated delivery dates to minimize schedule impacts. However, as we received quotes from vendors, we saw how significantly shipping and freight costs affected our budget. To account for this, we adjusted our material forecasting strategy by implementing a 10% indirect cost mark-up on all long-lead materials. This adjustment significantly reduced the variance between our forecast and actual costs, keeping it within an average range of 0-5%.
Looking at industry trends, what excites you most about the future of project controls?
I am most excited about the integration of AI and data analytics into project controls. These advancements will improve project insights, allowing us to foresee risks more effectively. Additionally, AI and analytics will provide quicker access to cost data with greater granularity, helping us make more informed decisions.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, what would the title of the movie be? And would it be a documentary or a blockbuster?
It would be a documentary-style movie called Foodie on a Budget, where I would eat and cook low-cost meals while saving up for those occasional, well-deserved food splurges!
